Summer Adult Tournament 2008
Abbey United FC, the supporters team for Cambridge United FC, organised and competed in their annual summer tournament on Sunday 24 August 2008. The tournament was competed for by 7 teams this year with supporters teams from Cambridge United (playing as Abbey United), Milton Keynes Dons, Northampton Town, Peterborough United, Stevenage Borough, Watford (playing as AFC Rookery) and local side Fulbourn Sports.
The early morning downpour had left the pitches quite wet however the rain held out for the play which allowed everyone to have an enjoyable day and also to enjoy the BBQ which kept everyone fed throughout the proceedings. Each team played a total of 6 matches, each for 20 minutes. The matches were all played competitvely and in good spirits, with referees enforcing the new Respect rules as seen throughout football this season.
The tournament winners were the supporters of Peterborough United and their win came down to the final game where their victory matched with a defeat for Fulbourn Sports in their final match gave them the trophy. Hosts Abbey United finished in a respectable 7th position with a total of 1 point, achieved against Stevenage Borough.
Many thanks go to Ben Yelton for organising the tournament, to the 4 referees who took oversaw all of the games on the day, and also to Hannah Ashman who unbeknown to her before her arrival took upon the role of keeping track of recording the scores and scorers for the tournament.
